Re: WMS March 2018 Board Report
The following are the key happenings at Woodland Middle School:
PENNIES FOR PATIENTS
The middle school participated in the Pennies for Patients fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in the middle of March. The program began with a kick-off assembly, then students brought in donations to their homerooms for the next six days. Two homerooms raised over $100, and one homeroom brought in over $200! As an entire school, students brought in a little over $1400 in donations! This project highlights the generosity of our student body and gives them an opportunity to help others in need.
The middle school has participated in this fundraiser for 18 years and has raised over $20,000 in that time span. We are also the school with the longest-running campaign in the northern Oregon/southwest Washington area.
Our Knowledge Bowl team won the competition on March 1st this year. This is a great accomplishment and we are very proud of the students on our team. This is the first time we have taken first place in years.
Our Science Olympiad team participated in multiple competitions and did a great job against some very strong teams. We placed in the following events:
- Battery buggy (2nd place)
- Hovercraft (5th place)
- Mystery Architecture (4th place)
- Potions and Poisons (5th place)
- Solar Systems (5th place)
We will begin state assessments on April 10th after we return from Spring Break. We will start with our language arts computer adaptive test which will be followed by math and then science. These state assessments will assist us as we forecast and place students in classes next year in our new seven-period schedule. Students that meet and/or exceed benchmarks (grade level expectations) earn the opportunity to take additional electives during the 2018-19 school year.
