WORKSHOP

This workshop was about transportation options. It started with Superintendent Green giving a little overview of past, present and potential future transportation options. Then Shannon Barnett, Director of Transportation, presented a PowerPoint presentation. First, he provides details on the hybrid transportation model that is currently being used, including shuttle functions, run zones, building specific direct drop functions, and school bus ride times from all locations. Next, Barnett presents the school board with three additional options; a neighborhood elementary schools and hybrid run model, a tiered schools and double-run model and a neighborhood elementary schools and double-run model.

After Shannon’s presentation, the floor was open to the school board to ask clarifying questions. And brainstorm the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats associated with each of the options.

Next, with all the information the workshop turned into an open discussion to way out the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for the hybrid transportation model and neighborhood elementary schools and double run model. Here are some of the highlights from that conversation:

Current Model (Tiered Elementary Schools with a Hybrid Transportation Model)

Strengths

Weaknesses

  • Model is currently working.
  • Offers direct drop which shortens ride time for a small amount of students
  • Students and teachers within grade level are together in the same buildings.

  • Very long bus rides.
  • Long building to building ride times.
  • Harder to train & retain sub drivers due to complex routes.
  • Before/after school teacher collaboration.
  • Too large of collaboration groups.
  • Exposure between K-12 students on buses.
  • Less opportunities for clubs and zero period.
  • Number of school transitions for kids is difficult.

Opportunities

Threats

  • Long ride = more behavior issues.
  • School transition could be difficult for children who experience trauma

Neighborhood Elementary Schools and Double-Run Model

Strengths

Weaknesses

  • Age appropriate busing.
  • Transition from school to school is much slower.
  • Shorter bus ride times.
  • More route consistency.
  • Driver retention.
  • Higher sense of community.
  • Missing class time for sports/activities for students and teachers/coaches.
  • Lack of student unity from the students view.

Opportunities

Threats

  • Future expansion at WIS
  • Families would have all kids in one school from K-4.
  • Focus resources were the high needs are.
  • Higher student achievement.
  • Less traffic in town.
  • Community reaction to the change.
  • Staffing restructure.

Based on the review of the various options board member agreed that further review and deeper study of shifting to neighborhood elementary schools with a double-run transportation system as a possible alternative to the current school configuration and transportation model should occur.

The next workshop on April 9th will be on facilities and safety.

ADJOURNMENT
