RE: CTE Report
Here is a glimpse into what’s happening in CTE world at WMS and WHS:
Joe Bosch’s WMS Horticulture class has planted over 300 blueberry cuttings that are growing strong. They are 90% done designing and building our own hydroponics garden. This will produce over 100 plants that will be producing vegetables all winter. We have been in contact with WSU and will be getting a grant to start a community garden on campus. The class has received a grant and is designing the landscaping for our outdoor lunch room. Next week the class will be going to Holland Bulb Farm to help plant bulbs and see how a commercial flower grower works. They have received hundreds of fuchsia plants as a donation and the class has invited a grower into the classroom to teach us the care and propagation of these plants.
In Wayne Miller’s class, students in the automotive classes have been learning how to wire 12 volt systems and they are learning about suspension and brakes. Students in metal/welding have been learning how to perform ARC welding with the material in different positions.
Nalean Warndahl’s Medical Sciences classes (and any HOSA members) were certified in First Aid/CPR by Scott Peabody. Attendance at HOSA meetings has been really impressive – over 35 attending regularly.
Britt Jud’s LEGO Team had a scrimmage against 5 other schools Saturday, November 5th. It was a great opportunity for the students to run through the presentation on White Nose Syndrome and test the Robot in a real competition atmosphere. They did great with 2nd place finishes in Both Core Values and The Presentation. Our Robot programming proved accurate on a less than ideal surface. I think they are really bringing the pieces together now as we race toward the December 3rd Competition at Caitlin Gable School in Portland.
Kim Miller’s Skills USA has Skills USA has been very busy. They attended the fall kick off at Fort
Vancouver High School on Oct. 29th. Students learned about the organization while having fun with other schools. November 3rd through the 5th members of the officer team for SkillsUSA attended leadership camp at Cispus. They learned about team building through activities including a ropes course. Members of SkillsUSA helped Chef Dave prepare food for the Fine Dine event. They had a great experience as prep chefs. For fun SkillsUSA along with FBLA and FFA will be attending the Winter Hawks on November 11th.
Upcoming events for SkillsUSA include a school-wide food drive, sorting the food at the Action center along with a cooking demonstration at the Action Center using foods commonly given out and highlighting healthy eating.
Mrs. Miller is pleased to announce that she is now a member of the State Board for SkillsUSA.
