K-4 Vision & Mission
Our vision is to create a K-4 system that inspires a passion for learning and guarantees that all our students learn and achieve at high levels.
Our mission is to provide a superior education by aligning our actions that model a relentless focus on learning with an unwavering belief that all students can learn and achieve at high levels.
3rd & 4th Grade Smarter Balance Assessment
All 3rd and 4th Grade students have completed the ELA and Math portion of the Smarter Balance Assessment. Thank you to Lynnell Murray for her planning and organization that guaranteed over 300 students opportunity to successfully complete the SBA on time, using Google Chrome Books. Other than the heat, we had very few issues to solve during testing. Way to go Mrs. Murray! The teachers did an outstanding job keeping their students focused and motivated during this process.
The Washington Learning Standards, also known as the Common Core State Standards, require a number of instructional shifts in English Language Arts in order for students to graduate college and career ready. These shifts include:
- Regular practice with complex texts in their academic language
- Reading, writing, and speaking grounded in evidence from texts, both literary and informational
- Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction
To help guarantee student learning and for students to successfully meet the rigor in English Language Arts, students need to have a strong grasp of reading fluency and comprehension.
State law requires schools to offer opportunities for additional practice and intervention to all 3rd-grade students that fall below basic in reading. Families with current 3rd-grade students, identified as needing additional assistance and support in their reading development, were notified early this month of the opportunity we are offering their students this summer. These students will receive 4 weeks of intensive reading instruction to support their success moving into 4th grade.
Similarly, 4th-grade students needing additional support in the Common Core foundations and mathematical practices were also offered the opportunity to participate in summer school.
One School One Book
The benefits of reading aloud are remarkable. Studies have shown that reading to children helps them to listen better and longer, to build larger vocabularies, to understand concepts better, to feel positive about both books and learning – and much more.
When an entire school reads the same book, the buzz and excitement around the book augments these benefits. Reading a book together brings the added joy of building and expanding a sense of community among students, parents, teachers, and staff – and beyond. For the past month, WIS has engaged families, students, and staff in reading “Charlotte’s Web” as part of our One School One Book initiative.
On Thursday, June 9th, we celebrated the completion of “Charlotte’s Web” by inviting all of our families out to a “county fair” style celebration and movie night, featuring the movie, “Charlotte’s Web”.
“Just for Fun” Music Extravaganza
On Monday, June 6th, Woodland Intermediate families and staff enjoyed music, dancing, and other fun surprises performed by every 2nd, 3rd, and 4th-grade student. Directed by Linda Morris and supported by multiple staff and parent volunteers. The “Just for Fun” Music Extravaganza was the hottest show in town.
Art Fest 2016
On Tuesday, June 7th, all 2nd-4th-grade students were bussed over to the high school to experience the wonderful Art Fest. Thank you to Mrs. Comstock for helping our students put together an incredible display of art for all to see.
On June 21st, WIS students will celebrate their success in learning by participating in the WIS Field Day. Come out and join the fun. The students and staff earned this day of fun and celebration. Congratulations to all 2-4 students and teachers for their hard work.
